COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to introduce students to the business office and to prepare them to perform a variety of administrative duties such as copying data, compiling records and reports, handling mail, and composing business communications. Special emphasis will be placed on preparing for job interviews, composing error-free resumes and cover letters, and participating in mock interviews. The course also includes time management skills, stress in the work place, communication skills, business ethics, telephone procedures, reprographic resources, travel arrangements and oral presentations. The completion of a career portfolio is an important component of this course. This class is designed to introduce students to the responsibilities and skills involved in a modern business office.
Tech Prep


Students who enroll in the Tech-Prep program and earn at least a B in this course can earn college credit at Delaware Technical and Community College, Delaware State University, and Wilmington University.

Performance Objectives:
1. Demonstrate the ability to utilize a keyboard using the touch method with proficiency
2. Demonstrate the ability to utilize the ten-key (numeric) pad using the touch method with proficiency
3. Demonstrate ethical and appropriate behavior for a business environment and in the use of computer software

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:


PART I--KEYBOARDING/BASIC WORD PROCESSING (FIRST HALF OF COURSE)


  1. Observation of work habits utilizing correct keying technique (the touch system)
  2. Problem testsBgraded for speed and accuracy
  3. Completion of and quality of class assignments (requires regular attendance to class as per district policy)
  4. Timings on straight-copy material and saved on floppy diskette provided by instructor and returned to instructor at end of course. Diskettes must remain in the assigned classroom unless given express permission by instructor to do otherwise.
GRADING:

Papers are generally graded and returned to the student within one day. The student is to keep the graded paper in their folder which is required to be at their work station each day. Students retain their pocket folders or store them in a place designated by their instructor.
Timed Writing Standards--First Marking Period

3-minute Timed Writings
25+ wpm A
20 - 24 wpm B
16 - 18 wpm C
12 - 15 wpm D

Students must pass at least 3 timed writings with no more than 1 error per minute in order to meet the minimum standard.

A+ = 98 – 100%
A = 90 – 97%
B+ = 87 – 89%
B = 80 – 86%
C+ = 77 – 79%
C = 70 – 76%
D+ = 67 – 69%
D = 60 – 66%
F = 59% or below

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Demonstrate proper keyboarding technique utilizing the touch system.

  1. Demonstrate attitudes and work habits which are basic to efficient performance.

  1. Be prepared for class each period with all necessary materials, i.e., diskette, folder, paper for note-taking, pen or pencil, class handouts, and reference materials at work station every day when class begins.
